Should I move to take this job?
Mighty Mack asked the question:
have two options right now.
1. Stay put in Milwaukee and continue working in a nonprofit making $33k a year. The job is fun and laid back for the most part and I am given a flexible schedule to attend school finishing my undergrad. There is not much room for advancement as I have reached the position of associate director and my boss (director) isn’t retiring any time soon. I also do not pay rent where I live currently because I do the snow removal. I get two weeks of vacation every year.
2. Move to Chicago. I’ve been offered a job that pays $51k, room for advancement, decent amount of traveling(which I would love), more pressure, not much of a flexible schedule to finish my undergrad, and my boss to be is one of my best friends (this would be a plus). No vacation until after a year (get 1 week). Living in Chicago, I feel, would be exciting. Rent would be $500-$600/month
About me: 27 year old male, half way through to getting my undergrad in business, $30k in cash savings.
Help!
Mack

Should I stay in my job or look for something else?
Lizzy asked the question:
So - I graduated college with a bachelor’s degree about 2 years ago. Since then I have had multiple jobs, but none that I really enjoy. Right now I have been in my current job for 3 months and I’m working about 10-12 hours a day and making a little over $20,000/yr (it’s salary, not hourly). I just constantly feel stressed out, and though I work for a reputable nonprofit organization - i can’t help but think my time would be better spent elsewhere.
I am also applying for a Master’s degree in September, so I’m looking for something to hold me over until then.
Should I stay, working like a dog and making nothing - or find something else that might be able to earn enough to get me out of debt?
All input is appreciated! Thanks!!

Do we need an independent agency to do the EPA’s job?
Charlie J. asked the question:
The EPA only regulates greenhouse gases if they’re required to by law. There are a lot of great nonprofit organizations that try to get people to cut CO2 emissions, but they don’t have the power to make laws about it. Could the government start an agency that is actually determined to stop global warming, and isn’t run by politicians that would suffer if we reduced our use of petroleum?
I guess it would work if we got to vote for the leaders at the EPA, and they weren’t chosen by the Bush Admin…

Are there any large companies (fortune 500 or 1000 size) that are nonprofit or have good intentions?
KC asked the question:
I’ll be graduating from college in about a year with a degree in economics and I am starting to get things together for finding a job when the time comes. I would love to work as a budget analyst or doing something similar in a large company, but I am not excited about working for a company where the only goal is to make the big guys money. Are there any big companies out there that have higher intentions than making money? Like a hospital or service organization that is large? Thanks

I need a resume, a cover letter, and a “creative introduction” for a job I’m applying for?
tiptoetina asked the question:
…and I’m not sure how to put together the introduction. Nothing is specified in the job posting, and I’m not sure if I should email or call to ask what they want, since they put a big emphasis on “creative.” Has anyone encountered a similar request? What information did you include? The job is for a position in a creative nonprofit. Thanks!

I quit a job that became intolerable — do I include on resume?
Secondhalf asked the question:
I quit a job where I’d worked for a year. The manager was an intolerable person who drove morale into the basement and made everyone miserable; he had no respect for anyone, no people skills and was in general, a poor manager. Several employees have quit in the past year.
I did my best to look for a job but hadn’t found one and the situation became so miserable, I lost my cool one day and quit. The job I had before this was also one in which I was there only a year but it was because it was a nonprofit that ran out of funding. I’m tempted not to put the job I just left on my resume because it went SO badly. Friends tell me it’s better to include it. If I leave it off, I will have to say that I’ve been looking for a job for a year; if I include it, I will have to explain that the situation was so bad I left before finding a new job.
Which is worse? What should I do?

Job hunting advice for a big city person with a degree?
Ms. Candy I. Good asked the question:
I’m looking for a job. I have a degree, I have what I think is a great deal of experience, but nothing. I have been looking for two years. I go on interviews and they tell me that I seem to big for the job, I don’t know what that is suppose to mean. I try to tone things down and take items off of my resume, but I constantly get this, “You should be doing something on your own.”
I work in nonprofit, but I also write. I have applied for both nonprofit and writing jobs. I live in Los Angeles. I am getting very frustrated, it is getting more and more expensive here, I paste together all of these insane jobs and live a hand to mouth sort of existence, I’m going to end up homeless, if something doesn’t change, I tried to apply for a job at Trader Joes and they didn’t even call me back…please give me some advice…

Any job search suggestions for a law school graduate who does not want to practice-ever?
Jess B asked the question:
I have been trying to enter into the nonprofit area but with no avail. I have work experience to back-up my education. I am more than willing to start at the bottom but I think that my degree puts a lot of people off. Any advice?

What kind of jobs can I get while currently working on bachelor’s in psychology?
julez asked the question:
Can I even get any jobs? i know with a bachelors one can work as a case manager or advocate at a nonprofit agency, but is it realistic to be able to have a job related to psych while still working on the bachelor’s degree?
I’m currently a volunteer on a crisis line at a domestic violence agency in which I’m getting clinical experience but what I’m referring to in my question is actual paid work while still *not* done with my b.a.

Would someone take a peek at my cover letter (first draft)?
FaZizzle asked the question:
I want as MUCH feedback as possible. There are holes from where information could give away my name or compromise the possibility of employment.
Things to know:
1) It’s a nonprofit job for the American Stroke Association.
2) I am a new grad.
3) I do have a completed cover letter, meaning there is more to it than what is included here. I know how to format, open, and close a letter. What is more important to me is to make this cover letter the best it can be.
Your advertisement posted at the Council on Philanthropy web site for the American Stroke Associate for the position of <> seems to perfectly match by background and experience in nonprofit work. My resume is attached for your review and consideration, and I believe that you will find me well qualified for this position. Please allow me to highlight a portion of my skills as they relate to your stated requirements.

How do I get help for me and my kids?
Violet asked the question:
How do I go about finding a person or corporation to adopt my family until I find a job? My husband beat me, went to jail, plead guilty, was convicted, lost his job and is divorcing me.
I am looking for a job (I have 14 years nonprofit management experience and a degree). Unfortunately, I’m trying to be able to keep the kids’ lives normal. I have two sons. One has a pervasive development disorder, ADHD and depression.
I know I will find a job, and have applied for social services temporarily. It’s just that the kids want to keep their house. We adopted five stray cats through the years and they are afraid we will lose them if we lose the house, which we will.
We’ve always paid our bills on time. We went from middle class to nothing on Nov. 24 and now I have no savings, after paying the lawyer and paying for living expenses.
I also need to find a way to get the two youngest kittens, that my now-gone husband adopted, spayed and declawed.
I would appreciate any
I don;t think anyone understands. The kids losttheir dad, lost their lufestyke and now are supposed to ditch their cats that they consider family members, too? That seems cruel.
